Bermudas

This piece is installed in a bathroom and provides the sole source of colour and light.

I was asked by the clients to imaginatively invoke the luxurious mood of one of their favourite poems 'Bermudas' by the 17th century poet Andrew Marvell, best known of course for To His Coy Mistress.

Vivid colour and painted motifs from the text are combined to project the poet's sense of abundance and wonder.

The opening lines of the poem have been painted into the glass, whilst a map of the Bermudas is depicted in the lower right hand corner.

The Bermudas form a possible model for Prospero's isle in Shakespeare's Tempest and I have tried to recreate some of that play's sense of magic.
